Howdy, fellow photography enthusiasts!

The State Fair of Texas is more than Big Tex, fried food, and Ferris wheels—though let’s be honest, those are photogenic too. But if you’re heading there with a camera, especially for the first time, there are a few things you’ll want to know.

📅 When It Happens

The State Fair of Texas typically runs from late September to mid-October. For 2025, it opens September 26th and ends October 19th.

🕘 Hours:

10 AM – 9 PM (Sun–Thu)
10 AM – 10 PM (Fri–Sat)

Some shows and exhibits have different schedules—check the Fair’s official site for the daily program.

📍 Location:

925 S. Haskell, Dallas, Texas 75223

📸 Photographer’s Guide: What to Expect

As a photographer, the Fair is a playground of color, light, and culture—but it’s not without limits.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Tripods & Heavy Gear: Don’t bring them. Even with a media pass, tripods, light stands, or anything bulky aren’t allowed. Keep it light and mobile. A mirrorless with a versatile zoom (like a 24–70mm) is your best friend.
  • Media Passes: I got one through the Plano Photography Club, but real talk—it didn’t open many extra doors. The access was nice, but 90% of what I shot could’ve been done without it. That said, being part of a club like North Texas Photo Club helps you network and apply for these opportunities.
  • Lighting Conditions: Expect harsh midday sun, dramatic evening neon, and unpredictable stage lights. Manual control and fast lenses go a long way here.
  • Best Times to Shoot:
    Early mornings (fewer crowds)
Golden hour & sunset (rides and lights pop)
Evenings (energy picks up, everything glows)

🎯 What to Shoot Beyond the Obvious

Sure, you’ll grab a shot of Big Tex—but look beyond. Here are a few standout subjects from my latest visit:

  • Dia de los Muertos Celebrations – stunning colors and heartfelt expressions
  • Fiesta de Marionetas – storytelling in motion
  • Acrobuffos Water Show – chaotic and hilarious; a great action challenge
  • Sarah Twister & Mighty Mike – incredible live performers who bring their own energy and character to the fair

These side-stage acts often steal the show, and most people walk right past them. That’s where the real photo magic lives.

💡 Final Tips

  • Travel light. It’s hot, crowded, and long.
Be respectful—many performers are working hard and love photographers who engage kindly.
Talk to people. That connection often gets you better shots than a press pass.
Bring backup batteries and memory cards—you’ll need them.

🔚 Wrapping It Up

The State Fair of Texas is one of the most vibrant shooting experiences in the state, whether you’re on a casual walk or building a professional series. If you know what to expect and pack smart, you’ll come home with more than just a few snapshots—you’ll capture stories.
