Engagement Photo Shoot in The Colony, TX with a Lake Twist

engagement photo shoot

Every photo session comes with surprises—but that’s where the fun and creativity live.

I recently worked with a couple who wanted a beach-themed engagement photo shoot, and we started the session in a studio using a green screen. They were all in—complete with props and outfits, including matching Dallas Stars jerseys. There was just one problem: green-on-green doesn’t work.

If you’ve worked with green screens before, you know that wearing green turns you invisible in the final image. So instead of forcing it, I made a quick decision.

We packed up and headed a few minutes away to Stewart Creek Park in The Colony, TX, where the natural light was perfect, and the lake gave us the soft, open look they were hoping for. And honestly, it worked out even better than the studio plan.

What to Know Before Your Engagement Photo Shoot

Whether you’re planning a studio shoot, an outdoor session, or both—here are some quick lessons from this session that can help you get the most out of your day:

  1. Check Your Outfit Colors
If you’re doing anything involving a green screen, avoid wearing green or reflective materials. Light colors and solid neutrals photograph best in studio settings. For outdoor shoots, consider the location backdrop so you stand out without clashing.
  2. Have a Backup Plan
Weather, lighting, or outfit choices can change things fast. A flexible mindset (and photographer) makes all the difference. In our case, moving the shoot outdoors gave us better light, a real environment, and more emotional authenticity.
  3. Choose the Right Location
Places like Stewart Creek Park offer a mix of trees, open sky, and lakeside views—great for relaxed, romantic engagement pictures. When choosing a location, consider natural light, time of day, and how busy the spot might be.

Why It Worked

Even though the original green screen plan didn’t pan out, the outdoor setting gave the couple photos that felt more natural and timeless. This is something I always aim for as a Dallas engagement photographer: creating images that feel like real moments, not just set-ups.

Final Thoughts

Engagement photo sessions don’t need to be flawless to be meaningful. In fact, it’s often the curveballs that lead to the best, most memorable photos.

If you’re planning your own engagement session—whether in Dallas, The Colony, or Lewisville —being open to spontaneity can elevate the whole experience.
