Tips for Photographing Fashion Shows Like a Pro

TWU Fashion Show 2024

Hey there, photography enthusiasts! Keekeh Rojas here, thrilled to share my journey into the exciting world of fashion show photography. Recently, I had the fantastic opportunity to shoot my first fashion show, “Unearthed Auras,” at Texas Woman’s University. This experience was a vibrant introduction to the fast-paced, beautifully styled world of runway shows, and I’m eager to pass on what I’ve learned to help you capture every moment with flair.

Navigating Fashion Show Lighting

Model Motion DressOne of the most challenging aspects of photographing fashion shows is the lighting. At the TWU library venue, I initially considered using an off-camera flash, but the consistent lighting setup allowed me to rely on natural lighting instead. Here’s how I dialed in my camera for the best results:

  • Aperture: f/2.8, perfect for keeping the models sharply focused against a softly blurred background.
  • Shutter Speed: 1/400s, crucial for freezing motion and capturing those crisp, dynamic moments.
  • ISO: 4000, enhancing image brightness without too much noise, even in lower light.

I tweaked these settings after a few test shots to perfectly capture the vibrancy of the runway.

Choosing the Right Lens

Lens choice can significantly impact your fashion show photography. I opted for the versatile 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, which was ideal for its flexibility—allowing me to frame both wide scenes and detailed close-ups effectively. Although I considered bringing a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, it would have been too restrictive for the intimate settings of the venue.

Mastering Shutter Speed and ISO in Fashion Photography

For those looking to delve into fashion show photography, understanding how to manage your shutter speed and ISO is key. A fast shutter speed is essential to capture each model’s swift stride and the elegant flow of their garments sharply. A higher ISO helps compensate for lower light while keeping your images vibrant and detailed.

Model Looking LeftStrategic Positioning for Optimal Shots

Positioning is crucial. Being seated right where the runway turned into the stage allowed me to capture diverse angles, showcasing the models’ full expressions and intricate designs of their outfits. Always seek out spots that allow for direct views of the runway to best capture the fashion on display.

Embracing Portrait Mode for Fashion Photography

Switching to portrait mode was a game-changer during the shoot. Shooting vertically allowed me to:

  • Highlight the Models: Accentuating their height and the elegance of their walk.
  • Focus on Fashion Details: Capturing outfits from head to toe, ensuring no detail was missed.
  • Clean Up the Frame: Minimizing background distractions to keep the focus on the fashion.

This approach not only enhanced the visual impact of the photos but also minimized the need for cropping in post-production, making each shot ready to impress right out of the camera.

The Reward of Fashion Show Photography

Capturing “Unearthed Auras” was not just about taking photos; it was about capturing the art of fashion and the energy of the event. Each frame highlighted the emerging designers’ talents and refined my skills in a high-energy photography environment.
